Utility and Service Questions to Ask Before Handover

Utilities often receive less attention than paint and floor plans, yet they shape everyday comfort and recurring costs. Ask for specific answers and verify them during the final inspection.

Identify every connection

Record electricity, water, gas where available, internet options, generator or backup-power coverage, lift service, waste collection, and building security. Determine whether each account is individual or shared.

Understand the bills

Request recent bills and confirm any outstanding balance. Ask how service charges are set, what they include, when they change, and who manages repairs. For shared utilities, understand the allocation method.

Record handover evidence

• Photograph meter numbers and readings.
• Test water pressure, backup power, intercom, and access controls.
• Collect account references, support contacts, and building rules.
• Write down agreed repairs and completion dates.

Both parties should keep a signed copy of the readings and inventory. This creates a clear starting point for future bills and deposit discussions.
